Argos

The historic city of Argos was created and developed in the same area about 5.000 years ago. It is the most ancient city in Europe and Greece. It is the cradle of Greek history and civilization with an enormous historical and archaeological background, while its geographical position defines the important role of Argos throughout the Peloponnese.

It is the biggest city in Argolida as well as the economic and commercial centre of this area. Argos has a lot of archaeological monuments, the most important of which is the ancient theatre. It is one of the most imposing monuments of the Hellenistic period with a capacity of 20.000 spectators and is located near the forum. It was constructed by Polyditos at the end of the 5th century B.C. and is sculpted on a rock. You can also visit the Roman Bathouse, the ancient conservatory, the forum and the court house in the same area.

In the west part of town, there is the citadel of Argos. It is constituted of Cyclopean Walls in the centre (1800 B.C.) on which Roman and Venetian Walls were built. From the citadel we can view the whole Argolic plain.

In the museum of Argos, the visitor can admire interesting findings such as Polifimus blinding by Ulysses, the statue of Hercules, the copper armor, the prehistoric terracotta statuette and amphorae from the geometrical period. One can also visit the acropolis of Mycenae and the beautiful city of Nafplion, which is one breath away from our city.
